What in the world happened here?

OK, we’ve all looked at it, scratched our heads, and collectively decided that is not the way to do it.

If you look at it, you’ll notice that either the old key or the new key will work to get you in or out of the gate. We’re fairly certain that won’t happen in the other picture.
